2023 Speak Up Fearlessly – Seek Help Without Fear
According to a survey conducted by the Modern Women’s Foundation in 2023, approximately 90% of sexual survivors are afraid to report the incidents, and 40% have never disclosed their experiences to anyone.
Aside from the fear of insufficient evidence and the inability to prove their victimization, survivors are also afraid of others finding out about their experiences, potentially facing judgment and scrutiny, resulting in disruption in their current lives. Therefore, they often have to confront their trauma alone.
However, this also serves as a reminder that over 90% of perpetrators go unpunished, continuing to lurk in our surroundings, waiting for an opportunity to commit further offenses.
With 40% of survivors choosing not to confide in anyone, it highlights the severe stigmatization of sexual violence in society, making it difficult for survivors to seek external help.
That's the Everyday You Thought Wouldn't Happen
Sexual violence occurs all the time, happening throughout our daily lives during commutes, in school, at work, or in a variety of other places. It challenges people’s definitions of dangerous situations and their awareness of crises. "Self-protection" can no longer serve as a solution to prevent victimization.
In these dark situations that occur throughout our daily lives, perpetrators can too easily hide among us. The shame and self-blame brought about by the incidents, the discriminatory glances from people, and the ongoing threats from perpetrators all make survivors reluctant or afraid to come forward. Being unable to speak out makes it difficult for the public to understand sexual violence incidents and the harm they cause to both survivors and society.
Did you hear the victim’s unspeakable cry for help?
This year, we continue our "VOICE - Sexual Violence Prevention Advocacy" initiative and have invited actress Wu Ke-hsi as our ambassador for the third time. Our core message is "Speak Out in Support, Fearless in Seeking Help." We invite the public to empathize with sexual violence survivors, listen to the reasons they don’t feel comfortable speaking out and believe their stories, when people do these things, it can increase survivors’ willingness to seek help!
Together, Let Our Voices out!
To end sexual violence, we need more empathy and voices of support.
